Rachmaninoff Meets Paganini

Rachmaninoff Meets Paganini

Starts: Sunday, 18 August 2024
Ends: Sunday, 18 August 2024
Erin Sweetman joins Christ Church Camerata in the 'Rach-Pag' - one of the epics of the piano repertoire. Numerous composers have made variations on Paganini's original melody, including Paganini himself, but none are more popular than Rachmaninoff's brilliant work, including the 18th Variation, one of the greatest tunes of all time. The colour of Eastern European music continues in Kilar's marvellous 'Orawa', evoking folk fiddlers on the Polish mountains. Principal Violist, Paul Groh, has arranged delightful works by the German Baroque composer, Johann Groh, and a new work by Artistic Director, David Banney is featured in this finale concert for Newcastle Music Festival. Visit Newcastle in August! The weather is usually crisp and clear. Don’t miss Darby Street and its world of restaurants and designer shops. There are convenient light rail and bus services and plenty of great accommodation options. Christ Church Cathedral, one of the main venues, is only a few minutes’ walk from the ocean. Watch for whales and dolphins from any beach vantage point. Enjoy the coastal walk to Bar Beach, and lunch at Merewether Surf House. Ride a bike along the scenic Fernleigh Track. Stroll in tranquil Blackbutt Reserve and Hunter Wetlands Centre: enjoy a meal at the Wetlands Centre’s excellent café. The Hunter Valley vineyards and beautiful Port Stephens are an hour away with fabulous dining options and scenic tours.
