Pubs, Book Launch, Hats and Treasures

Starts: Saturday, 18 May 2024
Ends: Saturday, 18 May 2024
A Walking Tour of the ‘Past and Present’ Hotels of Hamilton. This will involve a leisurely morning walk around the CBD of Hamilton to identify the three current hotels still in business and also hear about the 14 other hotels that have since stopped operating. The 17 hotels, described as such, opened from the period 1843 until 1887. Many reasons are given as to why the 14 hotels closed. After completion of the Pub Crawl walk, at 11.30am the Centre will launch its latest publication, ‘Hamilton History Photographs from the 1870’s Stories from the 1840’s to 1850s’. The photographs of Hamilton buildings, streetscapes and landscapes are accompanied by stories about the subject, or someone associated with it. A recently donated ‘hat collection’, mostly hand-made items by the “Bonnet Box” and worn by the first lady mayor of Hamilton, Frances Hewett, will be on display in the Centre. A second display of ‘finds’ through their metal detecting gathered by two locals will also be on display.
