Plant Walk and String Making Workshop at the Rare Trades Centre

Plant Walk and String Making Workshop at the Rare Trades Centre

Starts: Saturday, 16 November 2024
Ends: Saturday, 16 November 2024
Collect and prepare plant fibre for weaving with Jodie Goldring. In this half-day workshop, Jodie will provide you with a wealth of information about plants used for basketry that can be applied to your own garden! In the morning, discover different plant fibres used in basketry and how to collect, dry, store and rehydrate them for weaving. Jodie will take you on a walk around the grounds of the Rare Trades Centre and the private gardens of the surrounding streets. Basketry plants will be identified and discussed during the walk and a small amount of collection will take place. Once back at the workshop space, you will explore making string as an experiential way to get to know the characteristics of plant fibre. A range of fibres will be provided to make string so that comparisons can be made through reflective discussion. Held at Ballarat's Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades, a world-class facility dedicated to learning and preserving Australia’s rare arts and trades through a series of workshops, masterclasses, events, and residencies.
