Jindera Lantern Festival

Jindera Lantern Festival

Starts: Saturday, 03 August 2024
Ends: Saturday, 03 August 2024
Light up Winter! Celebrate Jindera's German heritage with a Lantern Festival. Children and adults create paper lanterns, participate in a 'der Laternenumzug' lantern procession, meander through a light show in the Jindera Pioneer Museum grounds. They can enjoy German-themed food and drinks as well as be entertained by musicians and storytellers. The Museum complex consists of historic buildings centred around the General store, set in nearly a hectare of landscaped grounds. Features that will be illuminated during the festival include the wattle and daub cottage, an authentically furnished slab hut, a remarkable and extensive collection of farm implements, equipment and forge, a historic post office, and several other structures such as the cow bail and hay barn. Jindera was gazetted in 1869 with 126 acres set aside for the village. When 56 German settlers arrived in the 1860's from South Australia, they were the first of many other German settlers arriving to establish farms and businesses in the district. The Museum recreates the material culture of the early German settlers, using local relics many of which have been donated by descendants of the original German settlers .
