Join Sonya Rankine of Lakun Mara in a weaving workshop to learn traditional Ngarrindjeri and Ngadjuri weaving techniques. Create your own small basket or mat using natural fibres! Sonya Rankine is a proud Ngarrindjeri, Narungga, Ngadjuri, and Wirangu woman and business owner of Lakun Mara. Sonya will share with you the rich cultural tradition of weaving and the importance of weaving for Ngarrindjeri and Ngadjuri First Nation people of South Australia. Weaving for Sonya is more than just art, it is the important practice of cultural revival and maintenance. Sonya will also share examples of other basket weaving techniques she has incorporated into her art practice to create contemporary pieces that blend the cultural tradition of weaving. Sonya is an award-winning artist who received the 2019 OUR MOB Don Dunstan Emerging Artist prize, 2021 NAIDOC SA Artist of the Year and exhibiting artist of the 2021 Tarnanthi Art Exhibition at the Art Gallery of SA.
